Austria further extending top position in organic farming
Austria holds a top position in organic farming and, in recent years, has even extended its leading position although “organic” has meanwhile already become established as an international trend. In 2007 the area under organic farming increased by 2.7 percent. This means that 16 percent of Austria’s agricultural area are managed according to organic farming criteria. Organic area has risen globally to 31 million ha
Organic farming is also gaining more and more ground worldwide. Thus the turnovers from organic food rose in the years 2002 to 2006 by 43 % from 17.8 billion euros to almost 32 billion euros. Brochure "Organic Farming in Austria" republished
The Ministry of Agriculture has published a brochure “Organic Farming in Austria” in 2005. In addition to a statistical part, it answers questions like what the typical features of organic farming are, how stringently organic products are controlled.
