Additional € 280 million for crisis-ridden EU milk sector
BMLFUW/AIZ – Seeing the dramatic situation of the milk market an additional EUR 280 million from the EU agriculture budget are to be allocated to Europe’s milk producers. In this way EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel at the Meeting of the Agriculture Ministers on 19 October 2009 reacted to the vehement requests of many EU Member States – including Austria – to provide additional aid for this crisis-struck sector. > more about: Additional € 280 million for crisis-ridden EU milk sector

New economic stimulus package created for rural areas
In economically difficult times it is particularly important to give momentum to rural areas. Austria's farmers benefit from new EU package of economic
The EU heads of state and government have gathered in Brussels on 20 March 2009 to a total of five billion euro package of comprehensive economic agreement. Negotiations on the CAP Health Check concluded with acceptable compromise
At the Council Agriculture held in November 2008 the European Ministers of Agriculture concluded their negotiations on the CAP Health Check with an acceptable compromise. From the Austrian point of view important measures have still been reached in the final phase of the negotiations. In particular, the phasing out of the milk quota 2015 can be cushioned by a comprehensive package of measures. School fruit initiative - information campaign on healthier eating habits
At the Council Agriculture of November 2008 the European Ministers of Agriculture agreed to support the distribution of fruit in European primary schools - combined with awareness-raising for healthy eating habits - with an amount of 90 million euro annually from EU funds. In this way the awareness for wholesome food is to be raised in children already. EU: Marketing standards for fruit and vegetables lifted
Bent cucumbers and bulbous carrots permitted from now on – Numerous marketing standards for fruit and vegetables will be lifted in the European Union with effect from July 2009. Consequently, the relevant regulations for 26 fruit and vegetable species will be scrapped. Ten will remain. At the Management Committee, the EU Member States objected the Commission’s proposal with simple majority of the votes. Only northern EU Member States advocated the simplification.
