Use Austrian timber to achieve self-sufficiency and to eliminate dependence on foreign gas
Study affirms vast timber biomass potential in Austria – The Russia–Ukraine natural gas crisis of January 2009 makes clear that the intensified use of renewable energy sources is the prime necessity at the moment. Our goal must be to use the resources available in the regions in the best possible way and to take efforts to make regions self-sufficient in terms of energy. Being one of the countries most abundant in forests, the use of biomass is a great opportunity for Austria. > more about: Use Austrian timber to achieve self-sufficiency and to eliminate dependence on foreign gas

Biofuels Today – Facts and Figures
Biofuels are currently a topic of heated debate. The most important and up-to-date facts and figures on biofuels are summarised in this article. More than 30% of the energy consumption in the European Union is attributable to the transport sector, which is still growing. Unless countermeasures are taken, this will lead to increasing CO2 emissions with the well-known adverse effects on the environment and climate. Therefore, the European Union has issued a Directive for the promotion of biofuels or other renewable fuels as a substitute for petrol and diesel fuels. > more about: Biofuels Today – Facts and Figures

Biofuels do not make food more expensive
There is a big gap between the subjective perception of prices and actual price developments. The consumer price index published by Statistik Austria confirms the opinions of many Austrians that food prices increased last year, but the long-term comparison puts this increase into perspective. Between 1986 and 2006, prices generally increased by 54%, whereas food prices increased by only 33%. > more about: Biofuels do not make food more expensive

Renewable raw materials from agriculture
Much more intensive use should be made of the potential of renewable raw materials produced through farming and forestry for the purposes of industrial manufacturing and energy consumption. The Austrian energy supply system is therefore undergoing reorientation and switching to renewable energy carriers produced through Austrian farming and forestry. > more about: Renewable raw materials from agriculture

The Austrian Biomass Strategy
Within the framework of the EU, Austria has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emission by 13% by 2010. Since the emissions increased in the 1990s, the use of fossil fuels must be reduced to 18.5 tons by 2010, i.e., a reduction by more than 3 million tons of oil equivalents. The intention is to achieve this by increasing the share of renewable energy carriers in total energy consumption from 25% in 2002 to 33% by 2010. The share of agriculturally relevant bio-energy should be increased from 11.4% (2000) to 18% by that deadline. > more about: The Austrian Biomass Strategy

The Biomass Action Plan of the European Union
The Biomass Action Plan of the European Union aims at reducing Europe’s dependence on fossil fuels, cutting greenhouse gas emission, and stimulating the economic activities in rural areas. It is to lead to greater security of energy supply and to counteract the marked import dependence. Another superordinate goal is to reduce greenhouse gases. > more + downloads about: The Biomass Action Plan of the European Union
